C.A.R.E. for Your Habits Resource

Have you ever started a new habit and then just ... stopped?

This used to frustrate me to no end. I would start a habit like taking my daily vitamins, flossing my teeth or getting my butt out the door for my daily walk. Then, one day, it would dawn on me that I hadn't completed that particular habit in a few days - and sometimes even longer!

When I realized I had stopped, I would always wonder: "What gives? Why can't I remember to do this? Why can I not keep the motivation up to do this?"

I would then beat myself up with phrases like: "What the goodness (and sometimes stronger words) is wrong with me?"

I decided to take a closer look at the situation, as I knew there had to be a reason beyond "it's just me." This led me to my first habit book, and I have been knee-deep in habit research ever since! The best part is that the research and techniques actually work

Why do they work?

It comes down to systems and brain neural pathways. Habits eliminate the back-and-forth "brain banter" of making decisions by creating pathways for the brain to follow. It isn't about willpower: Habits are about creating systems that we can lean into and allow the brain to rest in the repetition. A true habit isn't something you have to force yourself to complete; it just happens naturally.

Doesn't that feel easier already? :-)

So, let's get at 'er!
